The Islamic Center of Sacramento is a faith-rooted nonprofit serving 500,000+ Muslims across Greater Sacramento; connecting Islamic families, diverse traditions, and neighbors united by shared values of compassion, learning, and dignity.

On December 12, 2024, the Islamic Center of Sacramento became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.

Why ICOSAC Was Born The Problem We Witnessed

In 2024, community leaders across Greater Sacramento—educators, parents, entrepreneurs, counselors—came together with a painful realization: despite representing 500,000+ Muslims in the region, our community lacked a unified center.

1. Faith as Foundation

We are rooted in Sunni Islam as guided by Qurʾān, Sunnah, and the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jamāʿah. We welcome all recognized Sunni schools of jurisprudence—Ḥanafī, Mālikī, Shāfiʿī, and Ḥanbalī—honoring classical Islamic scholarship while fostering unity among diverse traditions.

2. Community-Led Accountability

ICOSAC is governed by elected community members, not hierarchical leadership. Our Executive Board of 9 is chosen by the community. We publish monthly impact reports, audited financials, and maintain zero staff salaries above $150,000. 92% of donations directly fund programs.

3. Whole-Person Support

We don't isolate spiritual care from material care. A person cannot pray in peace if their child is being bullied, their marriage is breaking, or they're isolated in poverty. We address faith, family, education, health, and economic dignity together.

4. Cultural Respect + Innovation

We honor Bangladeshi heritage, Arab traditions, African American Islamic legacy, and American Muslim identity—all equally. We use modern technology, business incubation, and evidence-based counseling while keeping Islamic ethics at the core.

5. Women Lead Here

Consistent with Qurʾanic teaching that believing men and women are allies of one another (Q 9:71), women hold leadership positions on our board, lead committees, teach Islamic classes, and have equal voice in decision-making. This isn't tokenism—it's theology.

6. Radical Transparency

Your donations are tracked in real-time. You see where money goes, which programs run, and what impact occurs. We publish bylaws, governance documents, IRS filings, and annual audits—all downloadable from our website.

Our Creed & Religious Foundation

Sunni Islam. All Madhāhib Welcome

ICOSAC is rooted in Sunni Islam as guided by the Qurʾān, the Sunnah of Prophet Muḥammad (peace be upon him), and the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jamāʿah—the traditions of mainstream Islamic scholarship.

Our Approach to Islamic Jurisprudence

We welcome and respect all recognized Sunni schools of Islamic law (madhāhib):
Ḥanafī: Known for flexibility and consideration of public welfare (maṣlaḥah)
Mālikī: Emphasizes community tradition and legal principles
Shāfiʿī: Balances textual proof with legal reasoning
Ḥanbalī: Prioritizes Qurʾān and Sunnah with careful hadith scholarship

Our Practice

Prayer services accommodate different madhāhib (e.g., different hand positions, takbīr variations)
Islamic education teaches classical scholarship without sectarian bias
Counseling respects diverse Islamic perspectives on family, finance, and ethics
Major decisions (halal certifications, financial guidelines) seek consensus across madhāhib
